Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Coventry City

A place in the FA Cup semi-finals is up for grabs as Wolverhampton Wanderers and Coventry City meet in an all-Midlands showdown at Molineux Stadium.

Wolverhampton’s pursuit of their first FA Cup triumph since 1959/60 continues against second-tier opposition they last faced in competitive action in 2014. Pre-match favorites to end a three-game winless H2H run (D2, L1), Wolves come into proceedings on the back of four wins from their last five competitive games (L1), including a 2-1 home victory against Fulham at the weekend. Gary O’Neil’s side proved their FA Cup credentials with a 1-0 win against Brighton in the previous round, one of their two triumphs against fellow top-flight rivals in this season’s competition. Three consecutive one-goal margin home wins in the build-up to this encounter increase the likelihood of Wolves’ progression into the semi-finals. But it’s not a foregone conclusion.

Visiting Coventry brushed aside non-league side Maidstone United 5-0 in the previous round to book their quarter-final tickets. But the visitors must punch above their weight to reach the semis, something they might not be accustomed to, considering all three of their previous FA Cup wins came against lower-league clubs. Yet back-to-back Championship victories ahead of this trip have set the Sky Blues nicely for this contest, not to mention maintained their hopes of securing a playoff berth. On top of that, Mark Robins’ men have found the net on their last 13 competitive travels, suggesting they should trouble Wolves’ well-structured backline. Ominously for Coventry fans, their last quarter-final appearance in this competition was in 2009, when top-flight opponents Chelsea crashed them out.
