West Ham’s return to the Europa League didn’t go as planned, with Freiburg inflicting a 1-0 midweek loss on David Moyes’ side in the first leg of their last-16 tie. The situation looks slightly better in the Premier League after the Hammers went from three consecutive defeats to back-to-back victories, including a come-from-behind 2-1 win at Everton last weekend. Speaking of comebacks, West Ham staged one to beat Burnley 2-1 in the reverse fixture, extending their unbeaten H2H run to five games (W3, D2). Keen to complete a league double over the Clarets, they can draw confidence from winning nine of their last ten top-flight games against newly-promoted teams at home (L1). But there’s no room for complacency, given their underwhelming five-game home form in all competitions (W1, D3, L1).

Visiting Burnley will be out to prevent West Ham from becoming the seventh club to pull off a ‘double’ against them this season after Bournemouth did so last weekend with a 2-0 win at Turf Moor. Booed by the devastated home crowd at the final whistle, under-fire boss Vincent Kompany may relish hitting the road, where they’ve picked up more points (8) than on home soil (5). However, none of those eight points have come recently, with the Clarets suffering defeats on their last four Premier League travels. Perhaps more ominously, each of those losses saw them concede precisely three goals, increasing the likelihood of a fifth consecutive away top-flight failure for the first time since 2016/17.
