Ukraine vs Republic of Ireland

The Republic of Ireland take a trip to the Stadion ŁKS to encounter Ukraine in a revenge-poised UEFA Nations League Group B1 fixture.

After a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over the Republic of Ireland on Matchday, Ukraine thumped Armenia 3-0 last time out to claim the top place in Group B1. Each of Ukraine’s four goals scored during this Nations League season have come beyond half-time, suggesting action in Lodz could start late. Yet, the Ukrainians are still troubled by a heartbreaking failure in the 2022 World Cup play-off final. In order to ease the pain, Oleksandr Petrakov’s side will hope to regain their place in League A. Unbeaten in ten of their 11 matches in the post-Euro 2020 period, the ‘National Team’ will feel confident about doubling up against Ireland, even though they are stripped of home comforts due to Russia’s ongoing invasion.

On the other hand, the Republic of Ireland thrashed fellow UK rivals Scotland 3-0 in their last Nations League fixture, ending a run of back-to-back 1-0 defeats in Group B1. Hit by a few high-profile absentees, the ‘Boys in Green’ will hope to defy ongoing problems and make it three wins in four away internationals (W2, L1). Much of those hopes will hinge on their defensive showing, as their last two victories on foreign soil yielded an identical 2-0 scoreline. The Nations League has not been Ireland’s favourite competition by any stretch of the imagination. Before beating Scotland, they were winless in 12 previous Nations League contests, failing to score in ten.
