Tranmere Rovers vs Leicester City

Prenton Park hosts a potentially one-sided League Cup second-round tie between Tranmere Rovers and Leicester City.

Tranmere Rovers’ fourth consecutive League Two campaign has been off to a woeful start, with Ian Dawes’ side suffering an alarming four defeats in their opening five league matches (W1). What’s worse, three of those four losses saw the ‘Rovers’ concede multiple goals, suggesting Leicester’s attack could have a field day this midweek. If it’s any consolation, Tranmere overcame third-tier Barnsley in the opening League Cup round via penalties after an action-packed 2-2 draw in regulation time. Scoring should be a problem for the home team, considering they’ve only failed to find the net once in six competitive outings this term, netting 2+ goals in three of them.

In the meantime, Leicester City’s first season in the Championship since 2013/14 promises to be a walk in the park for the 2015/16 Premier League winners following a flawless four-game start to their second-tier campaign (W4). Despite winning for fun, Enzo Maresca’s men have struggled for conviction, as each of those four victories yielded a narrow one-goal margin, with three featuring an identical 2-1 scoreline. But their only multi-goal margin triumph this season has come in the League Cup, as an unanswered first-half double fired the ‘Foxes’ to a clear-cut 2-0 win over Burton last time out. It’s been 14 years since Leicester last encountered Tranmere in a competitive game, going down 2-0 at this venue while both teams were still in League One.
