Suwon vs Gwangju
The stakes are at an all-time high for out-of-sorts Suwon as they welcome Gwangju to the Suwon Sports Complex in a must-win K League 1 showdown.
After a narrow 1-0 loss at Jeonbuk Motors last time out condemned them to a seventh straight K League 1 outing without winning (D2, L5), Suwon have completely lost track of the playoff pace, falling a staggering 11th points behind 6th-placed Gwangju. Therefore, a win is a must for Kim Do-kyun’s side here, though you’d need to go back to the beginning of May for Suwon’s last home league victory (D2, L3), not to mention his men conceded 2+ goals four times during that five-game winless streak. There’s no light at the end of a dark tunnel, especially considering the hosts have been on the receiving end in their last three top-flight meetings with Gwangju, succumbing to a two-goal margin defeat on each occasion.
On the other hand, visiting Gwangju could be on the verge of establishing themselves as ‘stalemate specialists’ after drawing their last three league matches, with all three featuring under 2.5 goals. Since a 2-0 home triumph over Jeonbuk in late June, goals have been at a premium for the visiting side, as they’ve averaged only 0.5 per game across their last four top-flight fixtures. Given their ever-growing scoring woes, it’s a little wonder Lee Jung-hyo’s men come into proceedings winless on their four most recent travels across all competitions (D3, L1). There’s no need to mention three of those four match-ups contained under 2.5 goals.
