Spain vs Cyprus

Spain’s Euro 2024 qualifying adventure continues at Granada’s Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes against Group A whipping boys Cyprus.

After an overwhelming 3-0 home win over Norway to get their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign off to a flying start, Spain inexplicably slumped to a 2-0 defeat in Scotland, casting doubt on their bid to make it into the Euro finals for the eighth time on the trot. However, Luis de la Fuente’s side thrived in the face of adversity, registering a stunning 7-1 win at Georgia last week to extend their winning streak to three matches. Back to the Iberian Peninsula, the Spaniards are hot favorites to post another landslide victory and build on their outrageous 23-game winning home streak in Euro qualifiers, a run stretching back to 2003! It’s worth noting they netted a whopping 70 goals across those wins while conceding just eight in return.

In the meantime, visiting Cyprus will seek damage control after losing all four Euro 2024 qualifiers by an aggregate score of 11-2, stretching their disappointing losing streak in Euro qualifying fixtures to seven. Nailed to the bottom of Group A, the visitors could potentially stare down the barrel of a first winless Euro qualifying campaign since 2012. While they’ve got used to finishing bottom or second from bottom of their qualifying campaigns for major tournaments, having done so in 13 of their last 14 attempts, Temur Ketsbaia’s men are keen to avoid another humiliation. They’ve conceded multiple goals on seven consecutive travels since June 2022. Their hopes of shoring up their defensive woes here look virtually impossible, knowing they’ve lost seven of their last eight H2Hs (W1), including a dreadful 8-0 defeat on Spanish soil in 1999.
