Slovenia vs Denmark

Things kick off in an exciting Euro 2024 Group C as Slovenia and Denmark go head-to-head at MHPArena in Stuttgart.

Slovenia’s only second Euros appearance as an independent nation pits them against familiar foes Denmark and Serbia, as well as tournament favorites England. Their only previous foray into the competition didn’t go well, with the ex-Yugoslavia country bowing out of the 2000 group stages without a win (D1, L2). They’ll be keen to flip the script on day one, as they meet a Denmark side they faced twice in Group H of Euro 2024 qualifying, with the teams finishing on 22 points each (both W7, D1, L2). A 2-1 loss last November condemned Matjaz Kek’s side to a runner-up finish, worsening their disastrous H2H record against the Danes in the process (D1, L5). But as that’s one of Slovenia’s two defeats across their last 21 internationals (W13, D6), confidence should still be high around the Slovenian camp.

Unlike their rivals, the Danes have been frequent participants at the Euros, failing to qualify for just two of the last 11 editions. Since their iconic 1992 triumph, the Danes had stuttered on the continent’s grandest stage before reaching the semi-finals at Euro 2020. They’ll hope to at least match that feat this summer, perhaps buoyed by a three-game winning streak in the build-up to the tournament. Those victories form part of Denmark’s eye-catching run of losing just once in their last 12 internationals (W9, D2). Delivering action from the get-go has been of great help, with Kasper Hjulmand’s side breaking the deadlock in 11 of their last 14 outings.
