RB Leipzig vs Wolfsburg
Red Bull Arena is the venue as RB Leipzig and Wolfsburg go head-to-head in a handsomely-looking Bundesliga showdown.
Following a sluggish start to the season, Leipzig now find themselves in the quarter-finals of the DFB Pokal after their midweek win over Hansa Rostock while they are within touching distance of the European places in the Bundesliga. ‘Die Roten Bullen’ have strung together back-to-back Bundesliga triumphs by an aggregate score of 6-1 and are now targeting a third league victory on the trot for the first time this season. Wolfsburg’s visit to the Red Bull Arena sounds like a prime opportunity for Leipzig to maintain their upturn in form as they’ve not lost any of their last six home H2Hs in all competitions (W4, D2). However, the Saxons are winless in their previous five Bundesliga H2Hs (D4, L1), including a 1-0 defeat in the reverse fixture earlier this season.
Meanwhile, Wolfsburg have started the new calendar year with a whimper rather than a bang, drawing a blank in both Bundesliga matches so far (D1, L1). As a result, the visitors are now winless in their last eight league games in a row (D2, L6), conceding 2+ goals six times in that sequence. Another failed attempt to land the three points would see ‘Die Wolfe’ go winless in nine consecutive Bundesliga fixtures for the first time since autumn 2017. That’s not beyond the realm of possibility, considering that they’ve lost their last three league games on hostile turf by an aggregate score of 8-0. If they fail to get on the scoresheet here, it will be only the second time in their top-flight history that Wolfsburg have drawn a blank in four away matches on the bounce.
