PSG vs Brest

Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 title defense faces a potential banana skin as high-flying Brest touch down at the Parc des Princes.

Paris Saint-Germain have flown out of the traps at the start of the new calendar year, dispatching last season’s Ligue 1 runners-up Lens 2-0 on the road before a 4-1 thumping of lower-league Orleans in the previous Coupe de France round. In fact, PSG kicked 2024 off with a 2-0 Super Cup win against Toulouse before a 9-0 cup demolition of Revel en route to taking their unbeaten streak in all competitions to 12 matches (W10, D2). Excluding their European exploits, Luis Enrique’s men are unbeaten in their last 16 games against fellow domestic rivals (W14, D2). That puts them in a prime position to lift a record-extending 12th Ligue 1 crown, as does the fact they’re one victory away from piecing together their longest winning streak since the tail-end of 2022 (6).

In the meantime, visiting Brest could spoil PSG’s plans as they take the field in a buoyant mood after stitching together an incredible nine-game unbeaten streak in all competitions (W8, D1). ‘Les Pirates’ thumped Montpellier 2-0 in their last Ligue 1 outing, making it four consecutive league wins ‘to nil.’ With three points separating them from fourth-placed Lille at the start of this round, halting a disastrous 12-game losing top-flight run against PSG would go a long way in establishing Brest as credible top-three contenders. Eric Roy’s side must punch above their weight to leave Paris undefeated, and a four-match winning streak in competitive away action bodes well. Dreaming of a first-ever European finish, the visitors make this journey searching for a fourth successive away win in Ligue 1 for the first time since 2010.
