Netherlands vs Iceland
The Netherlands’ final warm-up fixture ahead of Euro 2024 pits them against Iceland at the famous De Kuip.
Despite failing to score before halftime in their midweek friendly against Canada, the Netherlands spoiled Jesse Marsch’s touchline debut with a rampant 4-0 win, upholding a near-flawless record of five wins ‘to nil’ across their last six. The only blemish was a 2-1 loss to Germany in March as Ronald Koeman’s men turn to their final warm-up fixture ahead of Euro 2024 in high spirits. The Dutch shockingly lost both Euro 2016 qualifiers to Iceland en route to a failed attempt to qualify for the tournament. Yet, those were their only defeats across their 12 H2Hs (W9, D1). Heavily fancied to make double digits this time, Koeman’s troops head into proceedings to improve an underwhelming record of just four wins in their last ten exhibition matches (W4, D4, L2).
On the other hand, Iceland couldn’t qualify for Euro 2024 after a 2-1 loss to Ukraine in the March playoff semi-finals denied them a last avenue to the tournament. However, Age Hareide’s men showed unparalleled resilience and fortitude to bounce back from that upset and claim a stunning 1-0 win against England last week. An incredible result at Wembley Stadium was their fourth victory in five (L1) and the third to see them keep a clean sheet. But there’s no room for complacency as Iceland must punch above their weight again to defy an indifferent record across their last seven friendlies (W3, D1, L3). Despite upsetting the apple cart in London, the visitors have suffered four defeats across their six most recent road trips (W2).
