Mallorca vs Real Madrid

High-flying Real Madrid travel to the Visit Mallorca Estadi to take on relegation-battling Mallorca in a seemingly straightforward La Liga task.

Mallorca head into matchday in the midst of a rough patch after losing their last four La Liga matches by an aggregate score of 9-4, including a topsy-turvy 4-3 defeat away to Celta Vigo in their most recent league outing. ‘Los Piratas’ have dropped to 16th in the table and are only two points clear of 18th-placed Cadiz, highlighting the importance of this fixture. However, history backs Mallorca to crumble again as they’ve suffered a staggering nine losses across their last 11 La Liga meetings with Real Madrid (W1, D1), including a horrendous 6-1 defeat in the reverse fixture. Luis Garcia’s side will feel obliged to start fast here, having lost 13 out of 16 La Liga matches in which they conceded first this season (W2, D1).

In the meantime, fresh from ousting PSG from the Champions League round of 16, courtesy of a come-from-behind 3-1 second-leg win at home, Real Madrid will be looking to put the La Liga title run-in beyond doubt with another triumph here. Following Sevilla’s underwhelming 1-1 draw away to Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, ‘Los Blancos’ could extend their lead at the summit to a whopping ten points going into the final nine rounds. Worryingly, though, Carlo Ancelotti’s men have delivered a mixed bag of performances across their last three La Liga road trips (W1, D1, L1), failing to get on the scoresheet twice in that period. But ‘Los Merengues’ have lost just one of their last eight top-flight visits to Mallorca (W5, D2), courtesy of a 1-0 defeat in their most recent such encounter back in October 2019. Madrid have never lost back-to-back away H2Hs in the competition, though.
