Mainz vs Eintracht Frankfurt
Europa League finalists Eintracht Frankfurt head to Mewa Arena to meet Mainz 05 in a mid-table Bundesliga encounter.
Despite having nothing but a Bundesliga top-half finish left to play for, Mainz have hit a purple patch down the final stretch, defeating perennial champions Bayern Munich and Hertha BSC by 2+ goals ‘to one’ in their last two league outings to halt a run of five matches without winning (D2, L3). Another victory here would see Mainz win three consecutive Bundesliga games for the first time this season and only the second time under current manager Bo Svensson, last compelting that feat in April 2021. However, ‘Die Nullfünfer’ have picked up just a point from their last three Bundesliga meetings with Frankfurt (D1, L2) after racking up 14 in their previous seven in the competition (W4, D2, L1). Having conceded just once in their last three home league fixtures (W2, D1), they’ll feel confident about turning things around in the H2H stakes.
On the other hand, Eintracht Frankfurt face the prospect of an underwhelming bottom-half Bundesliga finish, though they could still save an uninspiring season by lifting the Europa League trophy. Despite going winless in their last three Bundesliga away matches without scoring a single goal (D1, L2), ‘Die Adler’ will turn to their high-flying European form on hostile turf for inspiration. Oliver Glasner’s men have won their three previous away matches in continental action despite conceding on each occasion, while they fought back to claw a point against Borussia Monchengladbach in their most recent Bundesliga outing (1-1). There’s another good omen here, as Frankfurt have won both previous Bundesliga matches on Matchday 34, as many victories as in their 14 Bundesliga seasons beforehand.
