Lyon vs Marseille

The latest edition of a blockbuster ‘Choc des Olympiques’ fixture pits Ligue 1 heavyweights Lyon and Marseille against each other at the Groupama Stadium.

Ahead of their 122nd ‘Choc des Olympiques’ clash against Marseille, Lyon achieved a significant milestone by securing 50 points in Ligue 1 following their 2-1 victory over Toulouse in the previous round. That win kept them in the running for a spot in Europe, as they’ve had a flawless April in the league so far, winning all three matches. Laurent Blanc’s men now aim to post four consecutive Ligue 1 victories in the same season, a feat they haven’t accomplished since February 2021. ‘Les Gones’ will be confident of hitting that landmark this weekend after going unbeaten in their last 13 top-flight meetings with Marseille on home soil (W7, D6) since a 2-1 defeat in 2007! But it’s worth noting they’ve only won three of their nine home games in Ligue 1 under Blanc (D4, L2).

In the meantime, Marseille are currently on a six-match unbeaten run (W3, D3), which may give them a sense of confidence heading into this match. They understand that they must continue their impressive form to stay in the race for the league title, with leaders PSG maintaining a significant gap. Moreover, a positive result in Lyon will improve their chances of securing a spot in the Champions League for the upcoming season. After a 3-1 thumping of Troyes last weekend, Igor Tudor’s side could win back-to-back league matches for the first time since February. However, ‘Les Olympiens’ have won 11 away games in the top flight this season, with only Napoli (13) and Barcelona (12) doing better among clubs in Europe’s top-five leagues.
