Luton Town vs Tottenham Hotspur
Kenilworth Road is the venue as Luton Town and Tottenham Hotspur go head-to-head in contrasting Premier League circumstances.
When Luton pulled off a stunning 2-1 away win against fellow bottom-half strugglers Everton last week to put their first-ever Premier League triumph on board, manager Rob Edwards hoped his side could turn the corner. However, it proved nothing more than just a one-off, with the ‘Hatters’ succumbing to a 2-1 home loss to newcomers Burnley in midweek top-flight action. It was Luton’s fifth defeat across the opening seven Premier League matchdays (W1, D1), leaving them stranded in the lower reaches, outside the relegation zone on goal difference alone. Luton’s defensive woes have hindered their progress since regaining top-flight status after a three-decade wandering in the lower divisions, with Edwards’ side still seeking their first clean sheet of 2023/24.
In the meantime, Tottenham maintained their sensational Premier League start under new boss Ange Postecoglou with a last-gasp 2-1 home victory over nine-man Liverpool last weekend. In addition to becoming only the second ‘Spurs’ manager to go unbeaten in his first seven Premier League games in charge (W5, D2), Postecoglou set an unprecedented feat in Tottenham history. He became the first-ever ‘Lillywhites’ boss to see his side score 2+ goals in his opening seven top-flight games. Except for a 5-2 demolition of newly-promoted Burnley in early September, the Londoners have netted precisely twice on their remaining three league travels in 2023/24 (W1, D2). Though this will be Tottenham’s first away league meeting with Luton since 1992, their three previous H2Hs at Kenilworth Road have ended 0-0.
