Liverpool vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers renew hostilities for the fourth time this season as they go head-to-head in a high-stakes midweek Premier League clash.

Though back-to-back 2-0 victories over Everton and Newcastle United seemed to be getting Liverpool’s disjointed domestic campaign back on track, a disappointing 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace last weekend doused the optimism. Back at Anfield for the first time since a 5-2 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid, Jurgen Klopp’s men can find some courage in having kept three consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League for the first time this season. However, despite rediscovering their defensive resilience, the ‘Reds’ have faltered on the other side of the pitch, drawing a blank in four of their last six league outings. That hardly bodes well as they bid to avenge an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at Molineux Stadium earlier in February.

A stunning victory in the reverse fixture snapped Wolverhampton’s dismal H2H run of 11 consecutive losses to Liverpool in the Premier League, equalling their scoring tally for those 11 encounters. Wolves followed that success with a crucial 2-1 win at rock-bottom Southampton but have since gone winless in back-to-back league games (D1, L1). With only three points separating them from 18th-placed Everton at the start of this round, the ‘Wanderers’ are far from getting the job done. Much of the credit for Wolves’ ongoing relegation scrap goes to a poor-performing frontline that has netted a league second-low 18 goals this season. But the visitors can draw inspiration from the possibility of achieving a historic feat as they aim to complete the first league double over Liverpool since 1950/51.
