Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur

Anfield forms the backdrop for a mouth-watering Premier League showdown between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. 

Jurgen Klopp’s hopes of winning the Premier League title in his swansong season at Liverpool fell apart last weekend as the Reds drew 2-2 at West Ham in the follow-up of a dismal 2-0 loss to Everton in the Merseyside derby, falling outside the crown picture. Despite Liverpool’s recent hardships, the Reds are confident of taking three points against a Tottenham side they’ve only lost to twice in their 31 Premier League home H2Hs (W20, D9). But that’s not a foregone conclusion, as their only top-flight home defeat this season came against London-based Crystal Palace (W13, D3, L1), while they lost 2-1 in the reverse fixture in September. Another high-scoring encounter is a virtual certainty, as six of the last seven league meetings between these two teams have featured over 2.5 goals and both sides scoring.

On the other hand, Tottenham’s top-four pursuit suffered another blow in midweek as a 2-0 loss at Chelsea condemned them to a third consecutive Premier League defeat, leaving them seven points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa. A game in hand gives them a glimmer of hope, but they must pull off their first league double over Liverpool since 2010/11 to keep the dream alive. However, Ange Postecoglou has proved incapable of addressing Spurs’ defensive woes that have seen them concede multiple goals in their last three league outings at an average of three per match. That’s an ominous trend, considering they’ve capitulated at least twice in six of their seven Premier League visits to Anfield since 2017!
