Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid
Anfield is the venue as Liverpool and Atletico Madrid go head-to-head in a blockbuster UEFA Champions League showdown.
A three-game winning start to their Champions League campaign puts Liverpool in complete control of proceedings in Group C going into this matchday. The ‘Reds’ eked out a 3-2 victory at Wanda Metropolitano last time out, registering their first Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid following four failed attempts on the bounce (D2, L2). Another triumph here would all but cement Liverpool’s place in the Champions League knock-outs, and with just two defeats from 22 home matches in the competition under Jurgen Klopp (W15, D5), that prospect looks probable. That said, the Merseyside giants have only won two of their 13 Champions League clashes against Spanish visitors (D6, L5). Coming into this fixture on the back of a heartbreaking 2-2 home draw with Brighton in the Premier League, Liverpool can at least find some comfort in going unbeaten in all competitions this season.
In the meantime, Atletico Madrid have endured a sluggish start to their Group C campaign by their standards (W1, D1, L1), falling behind within 20 minutes in both previous Champions League outings. Though they rest second in the table ahead of the kick-off, they only have a superior goal difference to thank they are above Porto. Looking to build a healthy lead over the Portuguese side, ‘Los Rojiblancos’ will call upon their decent recent European record on English soil (W2, D3, L1). More importantly, the Spanish champions have avoided defeat in both historical European visits to Anfield (W1, D1). They now aim to win three consecutive away matches in the Champions League group stage for only the second time under Diego Simeone, last doing so between 2015 and 2016.
