Leicester City vs Manchester City
Wembley Stadium serves as a host venue as Leicester City and Manchester City battle it out for this season’s first trophy in the Community Shield showpiece.
Leicester City overcame Chelsea 1-0 in a keenly-contested FA Cup final last term to ensure their third appearance in the Community Shield showpiece event. After winning their first competition final in 1971, the East Midlands outfit went down 2-1 to Manchester United in 2016. Yet, the King Power side have won back-to-back games at Wembley by the identical 1-0 scoreline. But beating City could be a tall order for Brendan Rodgers’ team, considering they’ve suffered four defeats in their last five competitive H2H meetings (W1), drawing a blank three times across those losses. Curiously, the ‘Foxes’ conceded beyond the 65th minute in each of those five encounters, highlighting the potential for lowering their guard as the match progresses. But after signing last season’s Austrian Bundesliga headline performer Patson Daka, Leicester will be confident of at least finding the net.
On the other hand, Manchester City surged from an underwhelming league start to convincingly conquering the Premier League last season, leaving second-placed Manchester United 12 points behind at the curtain fall. This will be City’s third Community Shield appearance under Pep Guardiola, with the ‘Citizens’ winning the last two after breaking the deadlock within 15 minutes of play. Notably, the reigning Premier League holders have found the back of the net in their previous 13 matches against Leicester in all competitions. If they win here, Man City will draw level with Tottenham on seven Community Shield triumphs, a tally only bettered by four sides. After losing just two of their last 12 fixtures at Wembley (W8, D2), City will be confident of adding another piece of silverware to the cabinet.
