Leeds United vs Burnley

Leeds United and Burnley are set to trade tackles in a high-stake Premier League relegation battle at Elland Road.

Leeds United rounded 2021 off with three consecutive Premier League defeats by an aggregate score of 14-3, throwing their survival hopes into doubt. After winning just one of their last eight league matches (D3, L4), the ‘Whites’ have slipped to 16th in the Premier League table, a mere five points clear of 18th-placed Burnley. Keen to recreate memories of a stellar returning top-flight campaign last term, head coach Marcelo Bielsa will fall back on Leeds’ recent home form. Before falling to a dismal 4-1 loss to Arsenal in their most recent Premier League outing at Elland Road, Leeds were unbeaten in five top-flight home matches on the trot (W2, D3). Adding to their confidence, they are undefeated in all three Premier League H2Hs (W2, D1) since regaining top-flight status in 2020/21.

In the meantime, Burnley head into proceedings in the midst of a rough patch, having failed to win any of their last six Premier League fixtures (D4, L2) since beating the newcomers Brentford 3-1 at home in October. That, in fact, remains Burnley’s solitary Premier League success this term (D8, L7) as they start the new calendar year in the drop zone, two points adrift of safety. But the ‘Clarets’ are also one of just two Premier League teams alongside Newcastle United yet to win a league game away from home this season (D4, L5). Much of Burnely’s problems on the road have emanated from their lackluster attack, with Sean Dyche’s men netting a league third-low seven Premier League away goals so far. So it’s not surprising that they’ve lost four out of five away league games when conceding first this season (D1).
