Lazio vs AC Milan

One of the most heavily anticipated fixtures of Serie A Gameweek 3 pits Lazio and AC Milan against each other at the Stadio Olimpico.

Lazio enjoyed a superb start to the season under new manager Marco Baroni, thrashing newly-promoted Venezia 3-1 on this ground. However, a 10-man Udinese side gave the former Hellas Verona coach a rude awakening last weekend, netting in each half to beat his side 2-1. Back to the Olimpico, Lazio can take heart from a decent-looking six-game unbeaten league run on home soil (W5, D1). It accounts for their longest such streak since going unbeaten in 19 consecutive fixtures between December 2020 and November 2021 (W17, D2). That run included an overwhelming 3-0 triumph against upcoming rivals Milan, yet the recent H2H record spells trouble for ‘I Biancocelesti’ as they’ve lost their last three league matches against the San Siro outfit without finding the back of the net.

In the meantime, Milan’s start to life under new head coach Paulo Fonseca has all the makings of a disaster, with ‘I Rossoneri’ facing the risk of going winless in the opening three Serie A rounds for the first time in the three-points-per-win era. Indeed, after netting a late double to hold Torino to a 2-2 home draw, the visitors slumped to a 2-1 defeat at promoted Parma last weekend. As such, they could make a three-match winless league start for the first time since 1946/47 unless they find a way to beat Lazio in back-to-back top-flight H2Hs at the Olimpico for the first time since 2009. Milan narrowly edged out their hosts in this fixture last season (1-0), making it three wins across their five most recent league visits (L2).
