Juventus vs PSV Eindhoven

Allianz Stadium is the venue as Juventus and PSV Eindhoven lock horns in their opening 2024/25 UEFA Champions League clash.

Back to the Champions League after a season-long absence due to UEFA’s ban for breaching financial regulations, Juventus meet PSV for the first time. Though both clubs boast storied histories, they’ve never met before, yet Juventus’ decent-looking record against Dutch opposition (W9, D7, L6) gives the hosts a reason for optimism. It’s Thiago Motta’s first European game as manager, but the ex-Bologna coach can draw confidence from his solid start in Serie A (W2, D2). His men have kept a clean sheet in all four league matches this term, rediscovering their defensive prowess from the old glory days. However, back-to-back scoring blanks against Roma and Empoli cannot inspire much confidence. But the fact they’re undefeated in their last ten competitive games in Turin (W5, D5) does look promising.

In the meantime, PSV’s title-defending campaign in the Eredivisie, after breaking the record for the most points in the division’s history last term, has been off to a scintillating start. Peter Bosz’s charges have won five consecutive league matches by an aggregate score of 20-3 to set themselves up nicely for this trip. Worryingly for the Peasants, their historic record in Italy spells trouble, with the Dutch giants claiming just two wins on their 13 previous visits to the country (D4, L7), most recently beating Napoli in December 2012. Bosz has an extra motive after losing both prior meetings with Juventus in this competition, not to mention winning just two of his ten previous Champions League away fixtures (D2, L6).
