Inter Milan vs Salernitana
Inter Milan will be looking to get their stuttering Serie A title defence back on the rails when they take on basement boys Salernitana at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
Defending Serie A champions have brought their hopes of winning back-to-back Serie A titles for the first time since 2009/10 into doubt after alternating between draws (2) and defeats (2) across their last four league outings. Coming into this matchday, Inter held arch-rivals AC Milan to a scoreless draw in the first leg of their mouth-watering Coppa Italia semi-final tie, extending their goal drought in all competitions to 403 minutes of play! What’s even more worrying is that Simone Inzaghi’s men have lost both previous Serie A home matches, last going three consecutive top-flight games without winning at Meazza in April 2019. Therefore, Salernitana’s visit to the town comes at an opportune moment for ‘I Nerazzurri,’ who claimed a thumping 5-0 win in the reverse fixture in mid-December. Moreover, Inter have won both previous Serie A H2Hs at home, most recently in 1988.
On the other hand, Salernitana’s run of four Serie A draws in a row shows there is still some fighting spirit left in them, but a ten-point gap on 17th-placed Cagliari suggests stalemates may not be enough to get them out of the drop zone. Ominously, though, only Torino (7) have scored more Serie A away goals than Salernitana (10) this season, while only Genoa (28) have conceded fewer than them (27) in such contests. So it’s not surprising that ‘I Granata’ have returned a league-fewest eight points on the road this Serie A campaign. Even though it may sound bizarre, Davide Nicola’s men have netted more Serie A goals in 2022 (9) than Inter (6) after scoring 38 fewer than the reigning champions in the first half of the season.
