Inter Milan vs Fiorentina
Stadio Giuseppe Meazza provides the stage for a tasty-looking Serie A showdown between top-four hopefuls Inter Milan and high-flying Fiorentina.
Inter Milan must be grateful to March’s international break as it gave them a fortnight to regroup following a ponderous three-game winless streak in all competitions (D1, L2), bookended by a dismal 1-0 home loss to fierce Serie A rivals Juventus. Indeed, the timing couldn’t have been any better, with Simone Inzaghi’s side coming into this round desperate to defy a woeful four-game league form (W1, L3) and consolidate their position in a closely-contested top-four pursuit. Having lost their last two top-flight matches by a single-goal margin, ‘I Nerazzurri’ stare down the barrel of three consecutive Serie A defeats for the first time since losing four in a row in 2017. But after going unbeaten in their last 11 league encounters against Fiorentina (W6, D5), they’ll be confident of returning to winning ways.
If the international window came to Inter’s rescue, Fiorentina must be furious after stringing together four league victories for the first time this season, including a comfortable 2-0 triumph at Cremonese on their last Serie A travel. After picking up just one point on their first three league trips in 2023, ‘La Viola’ have won four consecutive away matches in all competitions, including two in Serie A without a replay. On top of their recent road resurgence, Vincenzo Italiano’s men can draw further confidence from going undefeated in seven of their last eight league meetings with Inter played in the second half of the season (W3, D4). The continuation of that eye-catching record would see Fiorentina post a fifth consecutive victory in Serie A for the first time since 2018.
