Greece vs Gibraltar

Greece’s bid to reignite their faltering Euro 2024 qualifying campaign pits them against whipping boys Gibraltar at the OPAP Arena.

Despite booking a ticket to the European Championship qualifying playoffs via the UEFA Nations League, Greece cannot afford to consider that the only path. Seeking their first Euro qualification since 2012, the Greeks have experienced a massive dip in form in the lead-up to this fixture, going from back-to-back wins at the start of their qualifying Group B campaign to two consecutive defeats, including a 3-0 loss at the Netherlands earlier this week. The impending home return will bolster Greece’s bid to get back on track, considering they’re unbeaten in their last six internationals on home soil (W4, D2). Since each of their four wins in that sequence saw them score multiple goals, a repeat of a 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture in March looks well on the cards.

That result maintained Gibraltar’s three-game losing run against Greece, not to mention they’ve conceded 3+ goals on each occasion. Unsurprisingly nailed to the bottom of Group B with all four defeats and a -14 goal difference, the continental minnows head into proceedings searching for their first goal in the ongoing qualifying cycle. That could prove easier said than done, with ‘Los Llanis’ losing their last seven Euro qualifying matches on the road without finding the back of the net. However, containing damage will be Gibraltar’s first assignment in Athens, given that they’ve conceded 3+ goals in 20 of their 22 Euro qualifying fixtures.
