Germany vs Greece

Borussia-Park is the venue as Germany’s last exhibition match ahead of Euro 2024 pits them against continental strugglers Greece.

Despite boasting a commendable 92% pass-completion rate and attempting 26 shots on goal, Germany could only manage a morale-damaging 0-0 draw against Ukraine last time out. The Euro 2024 hosts will hope for a better result in their final warm-up fixture, not least because they’ve defeated Grecce by a two-goal margin across their three H2H meetings in the 21st century. But it’s worth noting they most recently met in 2012. As for Germany’s recent form, it paints a bleak picture. Julian Naglesmann’s men have only won twice in their last six internationals (D2, L2), conceding multiple goals on three occasions. Confidence stems from Die Mannschaft’s super record of only losing one final match before starting a Euros finals since 1980 (W8, D2, L1).

On the other hand, Greece came agonizingly close to securing a long-awaited Euros return, only for Georgia to better them on penalties in their keenly-contested playoffs final. It proved the end of Gus Poyet’s regime, with interim manager Nikos Papadopoulos readying for his touchline debut. But the Greeks are unbeaten inside 90 minutes across all four internationals since November 2023 (W2, D2), including an incredible 2-2 home draw against France. Pulling off another upset would hinge on Greece’s capacity to defy a disastrous nine-game winless record against Germany (D3, L6). On top of that, they lost their only previous friendly meeting by three goals to one in 1970. A poor run of three scoring blanks across their last four international travels (W1, D1, L2) can’t inspire much confidence either.
