Faroe Islands vs Poland

Faroe Islands and Poland are set to lock horns at the Tórsvøllur in a bottom-half UEFA European Championship 2024 Group E encounter.

Despite kicking things off in Group E with a morale-boosting 1-1 draw against Moldova, the Faroe Islands’ hopes of qualifying for a first major tournament are dead in the water as they enter matchday six nailed to the bottom of the section. Losing four Euro 2024 qualifiers on the trot since that stalemate has left the Faroes chanceless going into the qualifying finale. But more importantly, they’re staring down the barrel of a first winless Euro qualifying campaign since 2008 unless they can turn their fortunes around in the last three rounds. Hakan Ericson’s side delivered a resilient performance in the reverse fixture in Warsaw but eventually succumbed to a 2-0 defeat, courtesy of Robert Lewandowski’s brace beyond the 70th minute.

Meanwhile, an underwhelming 2-0 defeat at Albania proved the end of the line for Fernando Santos’ short reign as manager of Poland, with the ‘Eagles’ sacking the Portuguese tactician less than a year after his appointment. It’s up to the new chief of staff, Michał Probierz, to galvanize the out-of-sorts Poland side, starting with his must-win showdown in Torshavn. After alternating between losing (3) and winning (2) across their opening five Euro 2024 qualifiers, the Poles found themselves stranded two points adrift of Group E runners-up Czech Republic despite playing one more game. There’s no margin for error if they’re to reach a fifth consecutive major tournament. The visitors can draw confidence from their flawless all-time H2H record (W3) and a resounding 12-0 aggregate score.
