Eintracht Frankfurt vs Wolfsburg

Deutsche Bank Park is the venue as Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg go head-to-head in a tasty-looking Bundesliga encounter.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s stuttering run in February culminated in midweek Europa League action as a 2-1 home loss to Belgian outfit Royale Union Saint-Gilloise condemned them to a dismal knockout playoff exit. Yet to win a game this month (D3, L2), manager Dino Toppmoller has come under heavy scrutiny, not least because Die Adler’s hopes of securing Champions League football are nearly dead. Caught eight points adrift of fourth-placed Borussia Dortmund, the hosts come into this game seeking an improvement on a disappointing seven-game home form in all competitions (W3, D1, L3). Deutsche Bank Park had been a fortress earlier this season, as Frankfurt went unbeaten across their first eight home outings (W5, D3). Rekindling that form is imperative if they’re to end a five-game winless stretch against Wolfsburg (D2, L3).

Wolfsburg’s decent H2H form is perhaps the only encouragement they can take amid a disastrous start to the new calendar year. Except for a 1-0 defeat at Union Berlin a fortnight ago, the visitors have drawn their five remaining Bundesliga matches in 2024, four of which yielded an identical 1-1 scoreline. Since beating Frankfurt 2-0 in the reverse fixture, Die Wolfe have only won twice in the Bundesliga (D6, L8), resulting in ending the last round in 12th. Eight points clear of the bottom three, their unbroken stint in the top flight from the 1997/98 season onwards looks safe, but that’s merely a consolation amid another faltering quest to secure European football. Deutsche Bank Park could be a perfect setting to inspire a revival, as Wolfsburg have won six of their last seven visits to this venue (L1).
