Eintracht Frankfurt vs Augsburg

Eintracht Frankfurt and Augsburg are set to trade tackles in a high-stakes Bundesliga showdown at Deutsche Bank Park.

A disheartening 3-0 defeat at Stuttgart last weekend took Eintracht Frankfurt’s dismal winless run in the Bundesliga to four matches (D2, L2), significantly compromising their chances of securing European football. Another multi-goal margin loss would put ‘Die Adler’ at risk of dropping out of the European qualification spots. However, that’s an unlikely prospect, with their last such defeat on home turf dating back to a 6-1 rout at the hands of Bayern Munich in August. It’s also worth noting that Bayern’s rampant victory remains the only blemish on Frankfurt’s near-flawless Bundesliga record at Deutsche Bank Park this season (W6, D7). On the downside, only two of those six wins came against top-half sides, while they’ve shared the spoils in four of their last five home league outings – all against bottom-half underachievers.

Meanwhile, Augsburg returned to winning ways with a 2-0 home triumph against Union Berlin last time out, halting a two-game winless league streak (D1, L1) to sneak to sixth-placed Frankfurt. With only three points separating the sides ahead of the kick-off, the visitors’ bid to clinch European qualification hinges on pulling off their first Bundesliga double over ‘Die Adler’ in the club’s history after a 2-1 win in December’s reverse fixture. But Augsburg’s recent record at Deutsche Bank Park spells trouble as four consecutive winless away H2Hs (D2, L2), accompanied by two scoring blanks, cast doubt on their hopes of upsetting the apple cart this weekend. Jess Thorup’s men can draw confidence from claiming two multi-goal margin wins across their last three league travels (L1).
