Denmark vs Serbia
Bayern Munich’s Allianz Stadium sets the stage for a ‘do or die’ Euro 2024 Group C encounter between Denmark and Serbia.
Euro 2020 semi-finalists Denmark recovered from a sub-par 1-1 draw against Slovenia in their Group C opener to hold Euro 2024 favorites England to an identical scoreline in round two. Manager Kasper Hjulmand can only lament a lack of clinical finishing in that fixture as Denmark dominated the Three Lions but slipped to a ninth winless outing at major international tournaments (World Cups/Euros) in their last ten. Yet to lose in 2024 (W3, D3), the Danes need a win against Serbia to secure a knockout berth at the Euro finals for only the third time since lifting the crown in 1992. The omens look promising for Denmark, considering they’ve dismantled Serbia in all three previous meetings between the two teams by an aggregate score of 8-1.
Meanwhile, Serbia’s maiden appearance at the Euro finals as an independent nation started with a somewhat expected 1-0 loss to England. Dragan Stojkovic’s men were on the verge of elimination on matchday two before Luka Jovic’s stoppage-time equalizer catapulted them to a 1-1 draw against Slovenia. Jovic’s goal has thrown the Eagles a lifeline, yet beating Denmark could be a tall order, especially considering they’ve only won four of their last 13 matches over the past 12 months (D3, L6). Defensive woes have seen Stojkovic’s side fail to keep a clean sheet in 11 of those 13 games, casting further doubt on their hopes of claiming an all-important win. Adding to Serbia’s sizeable list of concerns, they’re winless in seven consecutive games at major tournaments (D2, L5).
