Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur

Gtech Community Stadium is the venue as Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur go head-to-head in an all-London 2023/24 Premier League opener.

Brentford produced a memorable 2022/23 Premier League campaign, finishing 9th in the standings, four places and 13 points better off than their first season back in the top flight. However, without the departed goalkeeper David Raya and suspended goal-getter Ivan Toney, the ‘Bees’ face the daunting task of replicating last season’s heroics, especially after a dreadful pre-season. Thomas Frank’s side went winless in all five friendlies this summer (D3, L2), failing to get on the scoresheet in two of the most recent three. Despite all the troubles, Brentford can draw confidence from an impressive three-game unbeaten Premier League run against Tottenham (W1, D2) since a 2-0 away loss in their first top-flight H2H. Additionally, the Londoners finished off last season on a high, winning their final three home league games by a combined score of 5-1.

In the meantime, Tottenham Hotspur may need some time to recover from losing their talismanic striker Harry Kane to Bayern Munich. Kane’s exit added insult to injury after ‘Spurs’ finished 8th last term, missing out on European qualification for the first time in over a decade. Ange Postecoglou’s touchline debut carries a massive weight, with the Australian looking to turn Tottenham’s miserable away fortunes around from the get-go. A 4-1 win over the relegated Leeds United on last season’s final weekend marked only their third Premier League win in 11 matches on hostile turf in 2023 (D2, L6). Furthermore, Tottenham’s last away league clean sheets dates back to a 1-0 win at Fulham in January.
