Borussia Dortmund vs Augsburg
Borussia Dortmund will be aiming to rediscover their Bundesliga form when they meet out-of-sorts Augsburg at Signal Iduna Park.
Donyell Malen’s first goal for Dortmund since his summer arrival from PSV gave ‘Die Borussen’ a narrow 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League, getting them straight back to winning ways following last weekend’s 1-0 Bundesliga loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach. None of Dortmund’s six league matches this season have ended level (W4, L2). Despite those four victories, they’ve lost twice in their inaugural six Bundesliga matches for the first time since 2016/17. Desperate to mount a more serious title challenge this season, Dortmund can build on a three-game winning home streak in all competitions. That form ties in with the hosts’ recent top-flight H2H fortunes at Signal Iduna Park, with Borussia winning each of the last three in a row by an aggregate score of 12-5.
Meanwhile, Augsburg’s utterly underwhelming start to the season has seen them return just one win from their first six Bundesliga matches (D2, L3), as they hang just one point clear of the relegation zone. Goals have been at a premium for Augsburg this season, as they’ve netted just two Bundesliga goals, on an average of 0.33 per game. Having that said, the ‘Fuggerstädter’ have found the net in each of their last 15 top-flight meetings with Dortmund. Alarmingly, though, against no other side have Augsburg conceded more top-flight goals than against Dortmund (51) to date. Still waiting for their first Bundesliga away goal of the season, Markus Weinzierl’s men take the field winless in their last nine top-flight trips (D2, L7), conceding an average of 2.00 goals per game in the last four in a row, 2020/21 included.
