Bayern Munich vs Wolfsburg
Allianz Arena is the venue as Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg go head-to-head in a tasty-looking Bundesliga match-up.
It’s been a sensational start to the new domestic season for record-time German champions Bayern Munich. After a 5-3 walloping of RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup, Julian Nagelsmann’s high-flyers thumped reigning Europa League holders Eintracht Frankfurt 6-1 in their Bundesliga curtian-raiser. Seeking an 11th successive league title, the ‘Bavarians’ head into this fixture with high expectations as they’ve never lost a competitive home match against visiting Wolfsburg (W27, D2). Moreover, they’ve won each of their last four top-flight H2Hs at the Allianz Arena by an aggregate score of 14-1. Delivering action from the get-go, Nagelsmann’s men have netted 3+ first-half goals in both competitive outings this term and were 4-0 up inside the opening 43 minutes at Frankfurt last time out. It promises to be a long day for the visitors.
As for Wolfsburg, Joshua Guilavogui’s 84th-minute equaliser rescued a 2-2 home draw for ‘Die Wolfe’ against promoted Werder Bremen on the opening weekend. Despite breaking the deadlock, Niko Kovac’s men conceded twice in succession, which has been the case in each of their last eight Bundesliga visits to Munich. Kovac, who returned to the Bundesliga three years after being sacked by non-other than Bayern in 2019, is here to help Wolfsburg improve on last season’s dismal 12th-place finish. Though his new employers came out 1-0 winners at third-tier Carl Zeiss Jena in the DFB-Pokal on his away debut, this seems to be a tall order. After conceding 2+ goals in their last eight Bundesliga away matches against Bayern, Wolfsburg cannot hope for much here.
