Bayern Munich vs RB Salzburg
Bayern Munich and RB Salzburg are set to trade tackles at the Allianz Arena in the return leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie following a 1-1 first-leg draw in Austria.
Allianz has been a fortress this season, with Bayern Munich going unbeaten in 14 of their 16 home games across all competitions (W13, D1, L2), including a 1-1 draw with fierce Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend. What’s more, the perennial German champions have won each of their five European home meetings with Austrian visitors by an aggregate score of 15-3, including a 3-1 triumph over Salzburg in last season’s Champions League group phase. Adding to Bayern’s confidence, they have progressed from 21 of 24 two-legged knock-out ties after drawing the first leg away from home. Only once across their last ten Champions League last-16 appearances have Bayern failed to negotiate their way through to the quarter-finals, courtesy of a 2018/19 elimination at the hands of Liverpool.
Meanwhile, the first-leg stalemate gives Salzburg everything to play for in Munich, but after suffering six defeats in their nine European visits to German clubs (W2, D1), they look like a doomed outfit. Impressively, though, despite their relatively sparse European history, ‘Die Roten Bullen’ boast a positive two-legged tie record against Bundesliga opponents (W3, L2). Yet, having failed to keep a clean sheet in six of their seven Champions League fixtures this season, Salzburg will need a miracle to hold one of Europe’s fiercest attacking line-ups at bay. Moreover, the Austrian heavyweights have failed to win five of their eight two-legged knock-out ties after drawing the first leg at home. But they can take confidence from getting on the scoresheet in each of their seven visits to Germany.
