Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen
One of the most heavily anticipated fixtures in the European calendar sees Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen lock horns in a Bundesliga classic at the Allianz Stadium.
Driven by revenge after Leverkusen halted their 11-year stranglehold on the Bundesliga last season, resurgent Bayern Munich, led by new manager Vincent Kompany, will be out to settle the accounts. Kompany has already made history in Munich, becoming the first Bayern coach to see his side score a whopping 29 goals in his first six games in charge (W6). The Bavarians routed Werder Bremen 5-0 last weekend to maintain their 100% league start after a history-making 9-2 Champions League humbling of Dinamo Zagreb on this ground. Equally productive in both halves, Kompany’s men have netted on either side of halftime in all six outings this season. They’ll likely need that scoring prowess this weekend to avenge a 3-0 defeat in their last league encounter against Leverkusen and halt a three-match winless H2H run (D1, L2).
After becoming the first-ever Bundesliga club to win the title without losing a single match last term, Bayer Leverkusen slumped to a 3-2 home defeat to RB Leipzig on matchday two. However, Xabi Alonso’s charges have won all three remaining league outings this season, including an enthralling 4-3 home triumph against Wolfsburg last time out. ‘Die Werkself’ have been prolific at the start of the new campaign, averaging 3.25 goals per game after four league rounds. But they desperately need improvement at the back after conceding nine times. Despite their defensive blunders, Leverkusen’s bounce-back ability continues to shine, with the visitors going unbeaten in eight of their last nine games when falling behind (W3, D5).
