Al-Wehda vs Al-Hilal

Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Stadium forms the backdrop for a lopsided Saudi Pro League final-day showdown between Al-Wehda and Al-Hilal.

Though on the brink of improving upon last season’s 13th-place finish, Al-Wehda face an insurmountable task in the final round, needing to better Al-Raed’s result at Damac against none other than Al-Hilal. As the only side in the Saudi Pro League’s lower reaches to smash a 10-win landmark (W10, D6, L17), they’ll fancy their chances against the new champions. But Al-Wehda’s form in the lead-up to the season finale can’t inspire much confidence, with Georgios Donis’ side only winning once in their last seven league fixtures (D3, L3). Goals have been at a premium for the hosts in that sequence as they bagged one or fewer in six of those seven matches, casting further doubt on their bid to upset the apple cart on the final day.

In contrast to Al-Wehda’s below-par season, Al-Hilal have set one foot in the history books, going into the season finale as the only side in the Saudi Pro League yet to enter a loss column this term (W30, D3). Virtually unplayable even without Neymar, the visitors have steamrolled to a record-extending 19th league title, leaving runners-up Al-Nassr 14 points behind. Even with the crown seized almost a month ago, Jorge Jesus’ high-flyers are reluctant to let complacency get the better of them, comfortably dispatching Al-Taee 3-1 at home last time out to get on the cusp of a 100-goal threshold (99). One will do the trick in Abha, and with Al-Hilal averaging three goals per game across their last four top-flight meetings with Al-Wehda, it’s only natural to assume they’ll hit a century.
